Along with intellectual development, we want to ensure that students learn to be considerate of each other and to respect each other's needs. In practice, this means that considerable attention is given to ensuring that all students learn self-regulation. This is often a critical need for gifted students. We ensure that the learning environment is carefully structured so that transition from one situation to another is well managed. A consistent schedule to the day and to the week and explicit announcements regarding outcomes help students keep on task and engaged in their learning. One of the purposes of our short, monthly, whole school assemblies is the introduction of a specific virtue that will be a focus for the month. Sample virtues are: co-operation, determination, empathy, honesty, valour, etc. Teachers then reinforce the presented virtue within class activities that are designed to engage students and encourage them to make a personal committment to each particular virtue. Virtues are also reinforced by colourful graphics and signage around the school. Our teachers are able to give personal attention to each virtue due to small teacher/pupil ratios. Personalized attention also means that students and teachers are able to address particular issues and needs promptly. |
